How to use email with Mozilla Thunderbird

This page explains how to set the configuration for using email with Mozilla Thunderbird. If you have any questions, please inquire to the laboratory or department you belong to.

To change the password for emails or configure email forwarding, see "Personal settings."

1. Start configuration to add an account.

Go to [ツール] (Tools) on the menu → [アカウント設定] (Account Settings); the following screen will appear.
Select [メールアカウントを追加] (Add mail account...).

2. Configure the email account.

Then, enter the information of the sender as follows in the mail account setting, and click the [続ける] (Continue) button.

Your name Enter your name.
Email address Enter the email address assigned by the administrator of the laboratory or department you belong to. Or enter the email address described in the certificate of approval for the account.
Password Enter the current password

Caution! Do not check [パスワードを記憶する] (Remember password).

3. Server setting

Although a general server name will be automatically searched and displayed if you enter your name, email address and password alone when configuring a new mail account, click the [手動設定] (Manual Configuration) button and change the server configuration.
Or, go to [ツール] (Tools) → [アカウント設定] (Account Settings) → [サーバ設定] (Server Settings) on the menu and change the setting on the following screen.

Modify the server setting partially and click [OK].

Server name (e.g., mail.imc.tut.ac.jp)
Port number (993)
User name (The account name described in the certificate of approval for the account or the account name assigned by the administrator of the laboratory or department you belong to)
Security settings: Connection Security SSL/TLS
Authentication method Encrypted password
Important The mail server of the center will not accept authentication if the connection is not encrypted. (You will not be able to send emails.)
Thus, set the [セキュリティ設定] (Security setting) to SSL/TLS (communication path is encrypted) instead of "STARTTLS".
Encrypt the communication between the mail server of the center and the mailer you use.
Others In this procedure, IMAP is selected as an incoming mail server. However, both IMAP and POP3 (port number 995) can be used.

4. Setting of outgoing mail server

When [送信(SMTP)サーバ] (Outgoing server (SMTP)] is selected, the following screen will appear.

Server name (E.g., mail.imc.tut.ac.jp)
Port (465)
Security settings: Connection Security SSL/TLS
Authentication method Encrypted password

5. Others

When Mail provided by the Mac OS X is used, user authentication when sending emails may not work properly with only on the setting of [パスワード] (Password) as an authentication method.
If you encounter trouble whereby you can receive emails properly but cannot send them, try the [ MD5チャレンジ応答] (MD5 Challenge Response) as an authentication method.

Recently, some providers have started to prohibit connection to port 25 of servers that are not included in the provider's network. (For details, refer the list of ISPs that implements OP25B).
In this case, there are two ways to use the mail server of the center from such providers.

  1. Use the VPN connection service.
  2. Specify port 587 instead of port 25.

Your email configuration is now complete.
